How do you solve a problem like this? (-5x)(2x^2 - 3) - 4x
Are you trying to simplify?
@DNTU4GETBOUTME Yes.
First you apply the distributive property. Do you know how to do that?
Yes; am I distributing the -4x?
The - 5x should be taking out of the parenthesis You're going to take (2x^2-3) and seperate it. All and all you should end up with this −5x(2x^2)−5x(−3)−4x
Does that make sense?
I'm bad at explaining things. Moving on, next you should multiply x by x^2 to get x^3.
That turns into −5(2x3)−5x(−3)−4x . Next we're going to simplify −5x(−3). What do you get after doing that?
Multiply -5x by -3 to get 15x?
Correct! So now we have −5(2x3)+15x−4x
Next simplify −5(2x^3). You're doing really good :)
If you multiply -5 by 2x^3, you'll get -10x^3 right?
Yep! Now we have −10x^3+15x−4x. All we have to do now is add 15x and −4x.. which gives us?
11x.
Correct! So the answer is −10x^3+11x
Thank you very much for your help! Do you have time to help me with one more?
Sure!
4m - 3m(5m - 6)
Okay just like the first problem we're going to start by applying the distributive properties.
We're going to move the 5m and the -6 keeping them in their parenthesis. Do you know where to move them to?
To move them(after seperating them from each other, we're going to double a term. Just like the last problem
I'm sorry, I'm confused; where do we move them?
We're going to take negative 3 and add them there to get 4m−3m(5m)−3m(−6)
Next we're multipling m by m to get m^2. which simply changes our work to 4m−3(5m^2)−3m(−6)
Now we're going to simplify the last term −3m(−6)
that's 18m, right?
Correct! 4m−3(5m^2)+18m Now we simplify −3(5m^2)
-15m^2
Yep! We now have 4m−15m^2+18m
Now we add 4m and 18m together and get?
22m
But i'm a bit confused, aren't you supposed to add the 4m and -15m^2 together?
Correct! Great job! Our answer is −15m^2+22m
thank you again!
You're very welcome. Now you see how easy simplifying can be. I'm glad I could help
