First, it is very important when working in math to understand the important words used, for example: Dilation means "A transformation in which a polygon is enlarged or reduced by a given factor around a given center point." The ratio (new size)/(old size) is called the scale factor. To avoid errors, I would translate "A coordinate grid is shown from negative 10 to 0 to positive 10 on both x- and y-axes at increments of 1. A triangle PQR has P at ordered pair 4, negative 4, Q at 8, negative 4, R at 4 and negative 8. A polygon P prime Q prime R prime has P prime at ordered pair 2, negative 2, Q prime at ordered pair 4, negative 2, R prime at ordered pair 2, negative 4." to P(4,-4), Q(8,-4),R(4,-8), and P'(2,-2), Q'(4,-2),R'(2,-4) By inspecting the numerical values, do you see a link between the x- and y-coordinates of P and P', and similar link/relation between Q and Q' and R and R'.

Perhaps you \(know\) all that, but what's important is if you \(understand\) all that. Understanding is derived from observations and thinking. You have not yet shown efforts on your part. The question is: "What is the scale factor of dilation?" Just to clarify, PQR is the original object, and P'Q'R' stands for the image. Whenever you encounter a geometry or trigonometry problem, it is always wise to draw a sketch representing the data/information. The answer is not an ordered pair, it's obtained by \(observing\) and comparing the ordered pairs. The next step is \(on\ you\) to examine the ordered pairs and tell me what you see. They have been arranged in a way much easier to see trends out of them.

By the way, mathematically, dilation includes contraction and expansion. Medically, dilation means only expansion. So don't let the common meaning of the word fool you.
