For what value of x is the rational expression below defined? 2(x)+4/x-7 ? 7 2 -7 -2

@JackJordan

@hartnn

hartnn (hartnn):

defined? or not defined ?

hartnn (hartnn):

because there is only one value where that fraction is undefined and it will be defined for all other values of x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

undefined. sorry AGAIN!! haha XD

hartnn (hartnn):

so it'll be undefined when the denominator equals 0 ! :)

hartnn (hartnn):

when is x-7 =0 ?? for what value of x ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so just 7. haha

hartnn (hartnn):

excellent! \(\huge \checkmark \)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but what does undefined mean and how does that make a role in the question

hartnn (hartnn):

what is the value of say 1/0 ?? or can any number be divided by 0 ?

hartnn (hartnn):

we haven't defined what we get as a result of 'division by 0'. hence in any expression, when we get a denominator as = 0 , we say its undefined.. in your question the denominator was x-7

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OH. hahah got it;)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Darn it I missed the question... as for undefined numbers.... the reason division by zero is undefined is because you can fit an arbitrary number of 0s into a number. Infinite if you like, and still not get close to it. So dividing by zero outputs a set... which is another kind of construct all together... :O
