What even is LaTeX if I may ask?

OpenStudy (bloomlocke367):

LaTeX is a typesetting program used to make documents. It's what you see when you see different fonts in books or math problems in math textbooks.

OpenStudy (bloomlocke367):

You can do all sorts of things, like \(\Huge\color{teal}{\LaTeX~is~fun!}\) with some simple coding. Would you like to learn?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I sure would!

OpenStudy (bloomlocke367):

Okay, so to start out, you need to know the basics. Everything you make must begin with `\(` and end with `\)`

OpenStudy (bloomlocke367):

you could also use `[` instead of `(` if you want.

OpenStudy (bloomlocke367):

So, try this. \(Hi\) from this code: `\(Hi\)`

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\(hi\)

OpenStudy (bloomlocke367):

There you go!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

AHHHHSHHHEEEESSSS thats so friggin cool!

OpenStudy (bloomlocke367):

:D now to make spaces, you use `~` between each word.

OpenStudy (bloomlocke367):

I have to go, but I'll finish helping you later. Sorry!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

All good! Thank you!

OpenStudy (bloomlocke367):

Actually, I have about 30 more minutes, if you'd like to continue. @casdawson

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\hi\~am~i~doing~this~right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\(hi~am~i~doing~this~right/)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(\hi~am~i~doing~this~right\)

geerky42 (geerky42):

Try `\( hi~am~i~doing~this~right \)`

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\( hi~am~i~doing~this~right \)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Interesting!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\( hi~am~i~doing~this~right \)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\(could~ be ~easier...\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\( Hi~my~name~is~Cas \)

OpenStudy (rockstar0765):

\(\Huge\cal\rlap{\color{lime}{Yay~you~got~it!!!}}{\color{red}{\;Yay~you~got~it!!!}}\)

OpenStudy (bloomlocke367):

@casdawson, would you like to learn more?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I would!

OpenStudy (bloomlocke367):

okay, would you like to learn fonts, sizes, or colors next?

OpenStudy (horsegirl27):

I can help teach :)

OpenStudy (bloomlocke367):

-_-

OpenStudy (bloomlocke367):

jkjk, you can if you want XD

OpenStudy (horsegirl27):

haha of course I'm going to steal your spotlight XD

OpenStudy (bloomlocke367):

noooooo

OpenStudy (bloomlocke367):

I worked hard for this SS

OpenStudy (horsegirl27):

yeah, and I'll beat it :P

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'd kind of like to learn font right now. Or maybe color. Im not picky.

OpenStudy (horsegirl27):

Well, I'd suggest you learn in the order of the code. So size next. Then font. Then color.

OpenStudy (bloomlocke367):

Amelia... -_-

OpenStudy (horsegirl27):

Sorry Bri :P

OpenStudy (bloomlocke367):

Okay, well I guess she's right. We can learn sizes. That's really easy.

OpenStudy (horsegirl27):

I'll list them!!

OpenStudy (bloomlocke367):

-_- stop it

OpenStudy (horsegirl27):

Bri you can do it XD

OpenStudy (horsegirl27):

(but I would suggest you do it they way I usually do)

OpenStudy (horsegirl27):

* the

OpenStudy (horsegirl27):

brb hehe

OpenStudy (horsegirl27):

then I'll steal you spotlight XD

OpenStudy (bloomlocke367):

okay, there are many different sizes. There are \(\tiny tiny\), \(\Tiny Tiny\) \(\small small\), \(\normalsize normalsize, ~\large large, ~\Large Large, ~\LARGE LARGE, \huge huge,~\Huge Huge\)

OpenStudy (bloomlocke367):

to do that, you type `\(\tiny\)` or `\(\LARGE\)` etc... you put `\` in front of the command.

OpenStudy (bloomlocke367):

so like this, \(\large LaTeX~is~AWESOME!\) the code is `\(\large LaTeX~is~AWESOME!\)`

OpenStudy (bloomlocke367):

Now you try

OpenStudy (bloomlocke367):

@casdawson

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\(\large LaTeX~is~AWESOME!\)

OpenStudy (bloomlocke367):

There you go! \(\Huge\color{lime}{\ddot\smile}\)

OpenStudy (bloomlocke367):

Now, with the list I made, the code is what is said. Does that make sense?

OpenStudy (bloomlocke367):

Are you ready for fonts?

OpenStudy (horsegirl27):

you forgot scriptsize!

OpenStudy (bloomlocke367):

oops! XD I knew there was something I forgot. xp

OpenStudy (bloomlocke367):

\(\scriptsize scriptsize\)

OpenStudy (horsegirl27):

lol XD and did you talk about how not to forget to change it to `\(\` instead of `\(`?

OpenStudy (bloomlocke367):

yessssss Amelia

OpenStudy (horsegirl27):

scriptsize comes after Tiny btw

OpenStudy (horsegirl27):

lol ok Bri :P

OpenStudy (horsegirl27):

just checking ;)

geerky42 (geerky42):

\(\Tiny _{hi}\)

OpenStudy (horsegirl27):

(I'm the one who's done more tutorials than you ;) :P XD)

OpenStudy (horsegirl27):

cool @geerky42!!

OpenStudy (bloomlocke367):

... -_-

OpenStudy (bloomlocke367):

you guys are going to make lag.

OpenStudy (horsegirl27):

hahaha just messin with ya :P Okay, so Bri, continue teaching font

OpenStudy (bloomlocke367):

@casdawson are you ready for fonts?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Mhmmm

OpenStudy (bloomlocke367):

okay. So, just like with sizes, you must have `\` front of the font codes.

OpenStudy (horsegirl27):

you will put \ in between everything until you get to color

OpenStudy (bloomlocke367):

There are many.. I may forget some, so if I do, you can post them Amelia. There are \(\sf sf, \tt tt, \scr scr, \mathbb mathbb, \bf bf, \frak frak\). I'm pretty sure there are more, so @horsegirl27 post them. I can't find Caleb's table

OpenStudy (bloomlocke367):

However, mathbb and scr only show a change of fonts in caps and mathbb works a little bit differently than the others.

OpenStudy (horsegirl27):

I believe you only forgot cal

OpenStudy (bloomlocke367):

yes!!! thank you

OpenStudy (bloomlocke367):

\(\cal cal\)

OpenStudy (bloomlocke367):

So, \(\cal LaTeX~rocks!\) comes from `\(\cal LaTeX~rocks!\)`

OpenStudy (bloomlocke367):

now you try, pick a font and say something.

OpenStudy (horsegirl27):

if you make a mistake, we can help you fix it :)

OpenStudy (bloomlocke367):

yes, don't worry.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\(\cal I'm~the~Doctor.~I'm~a~Time~Lord.~I'm~from~the~planet~Gallifrey~in~the~Constellation~of~Kasterborous.~I'm~903~years~old~and~I'm~the~man~who~is~gonna~save~your~lives~and~all~6~billion~people~on~the~planet~below.~You~got~a~problem~with~that?\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I had to make a quote XD

OpenStudy (bloomlocke367):

OMG YESSSSS

OpenStudy (bloomlocke367):

Whovian for life XD

OpenStudy (bloomlocke367):

So, I think you got that down. We'll cover \mathbb when the time comes. I'll brb.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\(\cal Can~we~be~friends~like~dang!\) XD

OpenStudy (horsegirl27):

Yay you did it!! And I'll be your friend :P

OpenStudy (bloomlocke367):

\(\Huge\cal\color{purple}{We~sure~can!}\)

OpenStudy (bloomlocke367):

Are you ready for colors?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Heck Yeah!

OpenStudy (bloomlocke367):

Okay, there is a big list of predefined colors (meaning you can just put pink or yellow in the command and the color will show) or you can use html color codes (you can look those up online).

OpenStudy (horsegirl27):

Colors are way more complicated. There are some where you can say the name, but to be more specific, some colors have codes

OpenStudy (horsegirl27):

And it's also more complicated writing the code for using color.

OpenStudy (bloomlocke367):

Okay, color is a little different than font or size.

OpenStudy (bloomlocke367):

and Amelia, I'm getting there -_-

OpenStudy (bloomlocke367):

to use colors, the code is \color{ }{ }. in the first set of brackets, you put the color name (or html code) and in the second set of brackets, you put what you want to say using that color.
