Ok so the cross section is the shape created in 2 dimensions when you cut a three dimensional object. if you cut the object in the picture in half horizontally then and look at it from the top what shape do you see? It would look like a square or rectangle . since you don't know if all the sides are equal you can play it safe and say a rectangle. If you cut the shape in a diagonal from one corner to the other and look at it what shape would you see from the top? from the sides it would look like a triangle but from the top what would you see?

well not quite. because not all the lengths are the same. You would have a rectangle.
