Linda pulls out a tie from a box containing blue, black, and red ties. She records the color and places it back into the box. The table below shows the frequency of each color after 100 ties are pulled out. Color of Ties Blue Black Red Number of Draws 25 20 55 How many red draws can you expect if the ties are pulled out 1,000 times?
Hi! Well, we don't know how many of each tie is in the bag. But, after 100 draws, we probably have a good idea of the ratio of ties to each other and to the total - more draws in the red means that we probably had more red ties in the bag, so red got drawn more. Now, lets see how that proportion was. Well, for red, we got red 55 out of 100 times. So, that's 55% of the time. Really, it's a good guess that about 55% of the ties are red. Anyway, what is 55% of 1000? Similar logic can find how many draws we would expect to have of blue and black.
