PLS MEDAL AND FAN

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@tkhunny

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@vera_ewing pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

What say you? Where does it go horribly wrong?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I have no idea. A or B?

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

Never "Completed the Square"? You'll have to follow the algebra and see. Hint: \(r + s^{2} \ne (r+s)^{2}\) - generally.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I DONT HAVE A SINGLE IDEA HOW TO DO THIS.

OpenStudy (misty1212):

wow what a mean question !!

OpenStudy (misty1212):

you have to look at every single line to see where the mistake is made and even then it is confusing because they corrected in in the end

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

It's just completing the square. It's not a difficult thing. You should have this skill unless you haven't been paying attention in class.

OpenStudy (misty1212):

we can take them step by step if you like, it really has nothing to do with completing the square, not to disagree with @tkhunny

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm helping my daughter mate.... @tkhunny

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

Disagree, if you wish, but it is EXACTLY completing the square. That is where the Quadratic Formula comes from.

OpenStudy (misty1212):

yes i know that, i mean this question has nothing to do with completing the square, they are only asking you to find a typo it is copy editing is all, has nothing to do with the math involved

OpenStudy (misty1212):

it is like "find the difference between these two pictures" don't think about math, just find one line where they copied something different than the previous line

OpenStudy (anonymous):

C? Ugh. I don't know.

OpenStudy (misty1212):

step 6 \[x+\frac{b}{2a}=\sqrt{\frac{-c}{a}+\left(\frac{b}{2a}\right)^2}\] step 7 \[x=-\frac{b}{2a}+\sqrt{\frac{-c}{a}+\left(\frac{b}{\color{red}{4a}}\right)^2}\]

OpenStudy (misty1212):

it is just a typo, has nothing whatsoever with the quadratic formula, completing the square, any math at all just a simple typo for you to find

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So d?

OpenStudy (misty1212):

what makes it worse it it was rectified in the next step, so the actual formula is correct

OpenStudy (misty1212):

yeah D

OpenStudy (misty1212):

if this is the math your daughter is doing, find her another school

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

Try again. If you complete the square, and follow the process, you will detect any typo. Seriously, this is a legitimate math question. The solution is simple and more rational if you treat it so. The FIRST error is IN step 6, not after it. If you had completed the square properly, you would have seen it.
