A cell stimulated to increase steroid production will have large numbers of which organelle? a.ribosomes b.rough endoplasmic reticulum c. smooth endoplasmic reticulum d.golgi apparatus e.secretory vesicles Why is c correct? I need a detailed, understandable explanation.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hello, Q: "A cell stimulated to increase steroid production will have large numbers of which organelle?" First, and foremost, ribosomes are not organelles. So answer \(a\) gets crossed off first before anything. Anyway the answer smooth endoplasmic reticulum is correct to your question due to when there is a network of smooth endoplasmic reticulum they allow for increased surface area, for a number of action. Ergo because of this smooth endoplasmic reticulum store key enzymes, and the products of these key enzymes (which is important for steroid production). The reason why smooth endoplasmic reticulum is important for steroid production is because it serves to metabolize the steroids, and produce the final steroid hormone. It should be noted that smooth endoplasmic reticulum is not solely responsible for the process to produce the steroid hormone. If I recall correctly the mitochondria also plays part by splitting a chain of cholesterol which is passed to the smooth endoplasmic reticulum which in turns further modifies then passes it back to the mitochondria, and this pattern continues until finally the steroid hormone is produced. Peace.

Very good job here's a medal.

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

ribosomes may be considered as organelles even though they are not membrane-bound.

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

the key here is to LEARN the structure and FUNCTION of individual organelles and how they work in concert

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@nincompoop when are ribosomes considered organelles? If I recall correctly ribosomes are not considered organelles ever. I have heard the term non-membranous organelles, but alone using the word organelles I have never heard. Rather in retrospect I remember from a biology practice test asking if ribosomes were organelles the correct answer was that they were not organelles.

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

SINCE I and other biologist made it so

OpenStudy (petiteme):

Hahaha xD

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

for every rule, there are always exceptions and the general description that organelles are membrane-bound is true (in general) but we make the exception in the case of ribosomes. You will not be told wrong if you do not apply this exception.

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

If you are not satisfied, I can convince you by authority since I am a biologist.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I've always been taught that ribosomes where the organelles primarily involved in protein synthesis, for the past three years.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You have satisfied my scepticism. I will start referring to ribosomes as organelles as an exception.
