Yes there was a limit on gasoline during WWII, this was due to reserve gasoline for the tanks, and other gasoline driven machines being used in the war. Economically a lot happened during WWII, as well as after. (After the war Germany owed a lot of money, and essentially went bankrupt.)

During WWII, the American military spending grew substantially. Government purchases rose over what the real G.D.P. was. Also the American government got more involved with the American economic system. In which the American government attempted to decrease private consumption, and began rationing materials. Not to mention the American government also urged, and actively promoted people to save their money. Taxes also took a sharp spike upwards. (Probably due to account for the American government spending over the real G.D.P.).
