OpenStudy (christinestutes):

A circle has its center at the center of a square with 8-inch sides. Find the area of the square not covered by the circle. Round the answer to the nearest tenth.

OpenStudy (pawanyadav):

Can you find the radius?

OpenStudy (christinestutes):

I am not sure - is it 4?

OpenStudy (christinestutes):

This is what I think r = 4 d= 16 are = 50.24 area of square = 64 Then subtract 5024 from 64 and answer is 13.76 square inches

OpenStudy (pawanyadav):

What is d?

OpenStudy (christinestutes):

16?

OpenStudy (pawanyadav):

What's d representing?

OpenStudy (christinestutes):

Diameter?

OpenStudy (pawanyadav):

Diameter is double of radius. It should be 8

OpenStudy (christinestutes):

I have never had geometry - trying to learn from tutorial and am confused about this question.

OpenStudy (christinestutes):

ok thanks

OpenStudy (christinestutes):

I squared it

OpenStudy (pawanyadav):

But your answer is correct as diameter has no use in area.

OpenStudy (christinestutes):

I did pi r squared to get area of triangle - is that right?

OpenStudy (pawanyadav):

Yes but not triangle that is a circle

OpenStudy (christinestutes):

sorry that is what I meant - this is overwhelming switching between all of the figures. Then subtracted that area from area of square?

OpenStudy (pawanyadav):

Yes .you are right

OpenStudy (christinestutes):

Thank you so much for the clarification. I appreciate your help!

OpenStudy (pawanyadav):
