i dont understand funtions please help Which ordered pairs in the form of (x,y) does not represent a funtion of x? (-1,2),(3,2),(0,1),(5,2) (-1,2),(3,2)(-2,2),(0,2) (1,2),(3,2),(0,1),(3,5) and (-1,2),(2,3),(3,-2),(-2,0)

Mehek (mehek14):

what kind of functions?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(-1,2),(3,2),(0,1),(5,2) -1,2/3,2/-2,2/0,2 1,2/3,2/0,1/3,5 and -1,2/2,3/3,-2/-2,0

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can you explain how i would solve this

Mehek (mehek14):

I don't understand ur question

OpenStudy (anonymous):

those four sets are the ordered pairs they gave me in (x,y) form im to find which set does not represent a function of x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(-1,2),(3,2),(0,1),(5,2) (-1,2),(3,2)(-2,2),(0,2) (1,2),(3,2),(0,1),(3,5) and (-1,2),(2,3),(3,-2),(-2,0)

Mehek (mehek14):

hm you might want to tag some people

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im new on here i wouldnt know to to tag

OpenStudy (anonymous):

who to tag

Mehek (mehek14):

just put the @ sign

Mehek (mehek14):

there are many people online

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but to who is the question i dont know who to @

Mehek (mehek14):

go to the home page of mathematics and on the right you will see all the people online tag them

@jim_thompson5910 @zepdrix @whpalmer4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks @Mehek14

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Look for sets of points that have repeated x values to find the non-function. Example: { (5,7), (5,8), (10,19), (12,27) } The x coordinate x = 5 pops up more than once, so this relation isn't a function.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so to find the answer for my question i would only have to find the x the repeats?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so c would be the answer?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(1,2),(3,2),(0,1),(3,5) this one?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

yep it's (1,2),(3,2),(0,1),(3,5) since x = 3 shows up twice

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

A function must produce exactly one output for any given input. With the input of 3, we ask ourselves "what is the true output? 2? or 5?". Since we don't know for sure we just say it's not a function

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks so much you explain that better than my teacher could you help with a few more? like explain them to me?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

sure I can help
