I boiled water to make pasta and its temperature was 96 degrees. I put noodles in the boiling pot of water. After waiting 5 minutes it was 98 degrees. Then I turn off the stove and waited 5 minutes. Finally, after waiting 5 minutes the temperature cooled down to 86 degrees. What is the funtion to this? y =

I think its y = -5 +96

OpenStudy (ybarrap):

So in 5 mins water went from 98 degrees to 86 degrees in 5 mins which is a change of 10 degrees per 5 mins: 10/5 = 2 degrees per min Because the water got cooler, we need a negative sign. Because we started at 96 degrees, we need a constant (y-intercept), to represent where we started: y= -2t + 96 y represents the temperature of the pasta at time t Does this make sense?
