OpenStudy (meowlover17):

Check my answer Please (Algebra 1)

OpenStudy (meowlover17):

x2y − 7xy + xyz + x

OpenStudy (meowlover17):

That above is a 2nd degree polynomial am I correct???

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Is that X squared?

OpenStudy (mathmate):

"The degree of a polynomial is the highest degree of its terms when the polynomial is expressed in its canonical form consisting of a linear combination of monomials. The degree of a term is the \(sum\) of the exponents of the variables that appear in it" (wiki)

OpenStudy (meowlover17):

So it is a 2nd degree polynomial being 2 and yes its x^2

OpenStudy (mathmate):

It's not. Please read the definition of the degree of a polynomial, \(and\) the degree of a \(term\).

OpenStudy (mathmate):

It's not because if you look only at the degree of y, then the degree would be 1.

OpenStudy (meowlover17):

@mathmate so do i add all of the exponents together making it a 7th dgree polynomial?

OpenStudy (meowlover17):

I submittedt and got it wrongplease tell me what it is so i can better understand

OpenStudy (mathmate):

"The degree of a polynomial is the highest degree of its \(terms\), ..." Can you tell me how many terms there are in the given expression?

OpenStudy (meowlover17):

4

OpenStudy (meowlover17):

So it would be a 3rd degree olynomial

OpenStudy (mathmate):

Good. Can you tell me the degree of each term? Recall "...The degree of a \(term\) is the sum of the exponents of the variables that appear in it"

OpenStudy (meowlover17):

Let me show you this one and ill tell you tedegrees of terms let me know f im right please

OpenStudy (mathmate):

ok

OpenStudy (mathmate):

Also remember \(xyz\equiv x^1y^1z^1\) to help you add up the exponents.

OpenStudy (meowlover17):

4x^2+3xy+12yz 1st term goes to the 2nd degree 2nd term goes to the 2nd degree and 3rd term goes to the second degree so that is a 2nd degree trinomial

OpenStudy (mathmate):

Exactly! Perfect!

OpenStudy (meowlover17):

thank youireally do appreciate your hel

OpenStudy (meowlover17):

Help

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes that is right

OpenStudy (mathmate):

You're welcome!

OpenStudy (meowlover17):

have a gra day all 😍

OpenStudy (mathmate):

You too! :)

OpenStudy (meowlover17):

Great* sorry typping on an ipad sucks

OpenStudy (mathmate):

I know! :(
