how would you solve a matrix if there is a zero underneath the pivot position?

OpenStudy (usukidoll):

can you give an example? I know there are row operations 1. you can swap rows 2. you can multiply a row by a number 3. you can add 2 rows to create a new row that will replace the one of the old rows.

OpenStudy (usukidoll):

that's just REF - row echelon form... if you want RREF (reduce row echelon form) you must have 0's above and below the 1 [similar to an identity matrix]

k example: row 1: 1 5 7 9 row 2: 0 4 1 7 row 3: 2 -2 11 -3

nvm got it but thanks

OpenStudy (usukidoll):

|dw:1434517367302:dw| that 0 isn't doing anything wrong... as long as you don't have a 0 in the main diagonal...which breaks one of the rules... you must have a 1 on the top left corner
