OpenStudy (baseballguy101):

Find the measure of angle x. Round your answer to the nearest hundredth.

OpenStudy (baseballguy101):

OpenStudy (baseballguy101):

i know the missing side is 5 where do i go from there?

OpenStudy (mrnood):

With respect to angle x, the side labelled 12 is the 'adjacent side the side labelled 13 is the hypotenuse you can use sin, cos or tan to solve questions lik ethis which of those 3 options uses adjacent/hypotenuse?

OpenStudy (baseballguy101):

cos

OpenStudy (mrnood):

ok so write cos x = adj /hyp and put in the numbers

OpenStudy (baseballguy101):

so it would be co x = 5/12?

OpenStudy (mrnood):

no it's adjacent /hyp the side labelled 12 is the 'adjacent side the side labelled 13 is the hypotenuse

OpenStudy (baseballguy101):

ooohhh ok so cos x = 12/13

OpenStudy (mrnood):

correct now use a calculator to get x

OpenStudy (baseballguy101):

I know I have to do 13 cos x =12 where do I go now?

OpenStudy (mrnood):

no you have cos x = 12/13 so work out 12/13 then that number is the value of cos (x) your calculator then will have 'inverse cos' or ' arc cos' or 'cos ^-1' that function is the opposite of finding the cos of an angle - it fids the angle whose cos is 12/13

OpenStudy (baseballguy101):

sorry this is the hardest part of geometry for me. I have cos (x) = .923076923076923 so just divide that by arc cos and im done?

OpenStudy (mrnood):

no - it is not a division the arc cos is a function once you have the number then press arcos DONT forget to round to nearest 100th as asked by question

OpenStudy (mrnood):

suppose oyu have a number 60on your calculator when you press the cos button it works out cos 60 (and show 0.5 = cos 60) if you then press ARC cos it will tell you then angle whose cos is 0.5 i.e. 60 arc cos or cos^-1 is the OPPOSITE of finding the cos - it tells oyu the ANGLE

OpenStudy (baseballguy101):

i got 22.61 is that correcT?

OpenStudy (mrnood):

Did you ROUND the answer properly?

OpenStudy (baseballguy101):

so 22.60?

OpenStudy (mrnood):

what was the first 5 numbers in the answer on your calculator

OpenStudy (baseballguy101):

22.619

OpenStudy (baseballguy101):

i got it now 22.62

OpenStudy (mrnood):

ok - well done

OpenStudy (baseballguy101):

thanks for the help!! I actually understand this now!

OpenStudy (mrnood):

good - that is MUCH better than just getting ht e answer
