Help Needed: Eduardo’s average speed on his commute to work was 55 miles per hour. On the way home, he hit traffic and only averaged 40 miles per hour. If the round trip took him 1.25 hours, which expression represents the distance, in miles, for his trip home that is missing from the table? (Will give medal)
To see the problem better, see the attachment.
given - 55 mph to commute to work 40 mph to commute to home a round trip is 1.25 hours
so what happened to the speed? @Roman532
Why it decreased?
yes it decreased due to traffic... is the math symbol for decrease + or -?
- ?
yes because decrease means going down.. decrease in speed means going slow
the formula is distance = rate x time
we are given that the rate to commute to home is is 40 distance =40 x ?
So I'm guessing that narrows it to C or D?
yeah... I'm thinking that the variable for time goes first what happened to the time? If it took 1.25 and speed went down from 55 mph to 40 mph...
He hit traffic... And I'm guessing the answer is D?
we are given that a round trip took 1.25 hours and the speed decreased from 55 mph to 40 mph.
Now that I look at it...
so our time has to be t-1.25 because he hit traffic and his speed decreased
distance = rate x time distance = 40 (t-1.25)
the reason why it's not the first two choices is that it neglected the rate
Right because it has to be rate x time
mhm :)
not sure if order matters.. I'm assuming the variable goes first.. it's been over a decade since I've done those problems and I end up just guessing when I first did them... but I read it through carefully finding out what's given and what do I need to translate in math terms
yeah I'm having a hard time deciding whether it's C or D
do you have unlimited tries?
I get 3 tries, 2 left. It's a quiz I must pass. I'm going with C because it makes sense to x 40 and 1.25 and then subtract the hours
these problems don't surface at all in higher level Math lol. I think these problems are meant to torture young students.
Haha I just hate Algebra and Calculus, I'm not going to be some rocket scientist when older so I really do not need it, basically pointless. Busy work.
:S I'm looking at similar examples... the variable does go first.
Should I change my answer? I chose C
did you submit it?
Not yet just keeping note of this problem for the next quiz re-take
@UsukiDoll
yes?
Nevermind actually, I'll leave my answer as C
Thanks for the help
