Human cells contain 46 chromosomes, paired up as two sets of 23. The number 46 is a human's diploid number. Their cells contain two homologous sets of chromosomes, 23 chromosomes from the male parent that correspond to 23 chromosomes from the female parent.
In humans, each cell normally contains 23 pairs of chromosomes, for a total of 46. Twenty-two of these pairs, called autosomes, look the same in both males and females. The 23rd pair, the sex chromosomes, differ between males and females.
Ah, 23 pairs. Meaning 46 chromosomes in all, so you are correct.
