Emma is debating whether to use a straightedge and compass or a computer drawing program to complete a construction of a square inscribed in a circle. Which method do you think would take the longest to complete the construction and why?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

please!!

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

your thoughts?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think the drawing program

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

that will take the longest?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes there are more steps

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i have my notes right next to me

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so in the lesson, they have the two side by side? the hand drawn vs compute program?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

they two different lessons i have the printed notes from each

OpenStudy (anonymous):

*are

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

I see. So I guess the computer method is longer. I figured that the computer was more accurate and quicker since the computer is doing all the work (crunching the numbers, etc).

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Plus if you make a mistake, there's always the undo button

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thats what most would think but you still have to draw out the steps and it is more confusing since you cant use a compass or straightedge

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

when they say "computer drawing program", which program specifically are they referring to?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i have no clue

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it doesnt say

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

hmm strange. Well if they mean geogebra, then it's relatively easy to construct a square in a circle. Some knowledge about the diagonal of a square is needed beforehand though.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

but in general, maybe it's tougher so you may be correct

OpenStudy (javierpratdesaba):

I had this question on an exam once, and my instructor told me that it's more of a personal opinion that has to be supported :)

alright thanks!
