PLEASE HELP!! Drey makes $10 an hour plus $15 an hour for every hour of overtime. Overtime hours are any hours more than 40 hours for the week. Part A: Create an equation that shows the amount of wages earned, W, for working x hours in a week when there is no overtime. Part B: Create an equation that shows the amount of wages earned, S, for working y hours of overtime. Hint: Remember to include in the equation the amount earned from working 40 hours. Part C: Drey earned $490 in 1 week. How many hours (regular plus overtime) did he work?

OpenStudy (marinos):

Part A should be straightforward. You are asked to express W in terms of x, where x is at most 40. Each working hour of these x hours is paid for $10. A simple multiplication should do the trick...

OpenStudy (marinos):

When you get Part A we can move on to Part B.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

? i still dont get it

OpenStudy (marinos):

Ok. If Drey worked 5 hours last week, how much will he get paid?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

$50

OpenStudy (marinos):

Nice! How did you get that ? What should you do if Drey had worked x hours last week (where x is at most 40) to find how much he got paid ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i multiplied 5hrs times $10per hr

OpenStudy (anonymous):

would it be 10h+40

OpenStudy (marinos):

So to find Drey's earnings for last week, say W, what should you multiply by 10 ? In other words, what is W equal to ?

OpenStudy (marinos):

No. 10h+40 is an incorrect answer.

OpenStudy (marinos):

If Drey works for 5 hrs, he will earn 5*$10=$50. If Drey works for 8 hrs, he will earn 8*$10=$80 If Drey works for 27,6 hrs, he will earn 27,6*$10=$276 If Drey works for 40 hrs, he will earn 40*$10=$400 If Drey works for x hrs, he will earn x*$10=$W Therefore, W=10x. Is this clear?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

YESS thankyou

OpenStudy (marinos):

Let's move on to Part B. You are asked to find an equation of S, the total amount of wages earned by Drey, in terms of y, the hours he had worked overtime. WARNING! y is just the overtime hours, not the total working hours, and S is the payment for a total of (y+40) hours.

OpenStudy (marinos):

Try to express S in terms of y and don't worry if you don't get right immediately.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im still not quite understanding

OpenStudy (marinos):

Ok. If we are told that Drey worked x hours, where x is at most 40, we know what to do to find his earning. We'll use the formula W=10x and we are done. If we are told that Dreay had worked 45 hours what should we do ? Remember that the first 40 hours are paid for $10 each and that the 5 hours overtime are paid for $15 each. Try this on your own and let me know what you get.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well he started from the bottom

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so what would the equation be ?

OpenStudy (marinos):

Since Drey worked for 45 hrs (5 hrs overtime) he should get 40 hrs * $10 = $400 and 5 hrs * $15 = $75 so a total of $400+$75=$475

OpenStudy (marinos):

So, for Part B, if Drey worked for y hrs OVERTIME, he should get 40 hrs * $10 = $400 for the first 40 working hours and y hrs * $15 = $ 15y therefore his total amount earned should be $S , given by S=15y+400 Is it clear how I got the last equation ? Should we move on to Part C ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yess

OpenStudy (anonymous):

??? you there?

OpenStudy (marinos):

Now, for Part C. Since Drey earned $490 in 1 week , an amount which is greater than $400, what can we immediately conclude about his working hours ? In other words, did he worked overtime in that week or not ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (marinos):

So, since he worked overtime, we know that he worked 10 regular hours and , say, y overtime hours. He earned a total of S=490 dollars. Which formula should we use to find the overtime hours y ? Can you calculate y ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait i think i got the answer to part C. tell me if you think this is right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

40 regular hours + 6over time hours

OpenStudy (anonymous):

=$490

OpenStudy (marinos):

YES!! Congratulations!! :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i understand thank you so much!!

OpenStudy (marinos):

You are welcome!
