Amanda is observing the transverse cross section of an apple root under the microscope. She has to locate the stele. Which characteristic of stele will help her to identify it? It is present at the center of the root, surrounded by the pericycle, and has the vascular tissues like xylem, phloem, and cambium inside it. It is present towards the boundary of the root, lined by the cortex, and has the tissues like parenchyma and collenchyma inside it. It is present between the epidermis and the endodermis and has tissues like chlorenchyma inside it.

In a vascular plant, the stele is the central part of the root or stem containing the tissues derived from the procambium. These include vascular tissue, in some cases ground tissue (pith) and a pericycle, which, if present, defines the outermost boundary of the stele.
