An Independent variable is a variable that can function on its own without any other affecting factors. A Dependent variable is a variable that depends on another factor to function correctly. So "Larry is conducting an experiment to see how many inches of snowfall occurs in each city in the state." you can't count inches of snow without snowfall but snow can fall and you don't have to measure it, but the amount of snow that falls(inches) DEPENDS on whether or not snow actually falls. This makes the snow the independent variable and the amount of snow that falls the independent variable. SORRY IF I TYPED TOO MUCH
