A makes the most sense to me too. This is because, since the student is trying to compare the themes, which is same as trying to show where they intersect, and where they come about differently. In contemporary English, compare generallly means to juxtapose the simlarities, but compare can also include slight difference in which they go about with the same theme.

Compare-To align similarities in such manner that allows for interpretation of similar ideas, as well as noting slight gaps between what they say and how they approach.

Commpare came to also include "contrast" but in the classical sense compare doesn't include contnrast, but ever so slightly touches contrast.
