Algebra Question
If 7(a + b) - 4(a + b) = 24, what is the value of a + b?
there are so many ways to solve this but for some reason after simplifying i can't seem to figure it out
I reached the point 7a + 7b - 4a+ 4b = 24 and have no gone any further because i don't know how to do what next
What are your options? @kevinhunterwood69
its a grid-in question haha
my options for solving it are cancelling a + b or just algebra but ya i'm puzzled
combine the like terms, then you should be able to factor
actually, it looks like you distributed wrong
how?
-4(a + b) = -4a - 4b, so the equation is 7a + 7b - 4a+ 4b = 24
oh ya
-4(a + b) = -4a - 4b, so the equation is 7a + 7b - 4a- 4b = 24
posted the same thing you had originally :/
yeah
then combine
so 3a - 3b = 24
how do i um factor thi
3a + 3b = 24 then 3 is your common factor, so 3(a + b) = 24
ahh um
so a & b are both 4 but how do i reach that through algebra?
you don't have enough information to find a and b individually. They could both be 4, or a could be -26 and b could be 30. that's why they asked for the sum
fwiw, since they asked for a+b, and they already had them grouped, you could have considered it one variable and cut out the distribution/factoring
alright thanks
no problem
