A group of adults and students went on a class trip to Washington, DC. The number of male students was 1 more than 7 times the number of adults. The number of female students was half the number of male students. If the total number of people who went on the trip is 82, find the numbers of male students and female students.

OpenStudy (coconutjj):

Let the Number of Adults = X Represent the number of male students in terms of x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i dont understand @CoconutJJ

OpenStudy (coconutjj):

"number of male students was 1 more than 7 times the number of adults" - How would you write this a expression.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

7x+1 ?

OpenStudy (coconutjj):

GOOD!

OpenStudy (coconutjj):

"The number of female students was half the number of male students." - Now we have an expression for the number of male students, do the samething for female

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is it 7x+1/2 ?

OpenStudy (coconutjj):

YAY!

OpenStudy (coconutjj):

"If the total number of people who went on the trip is 82"- We know the number of adults which is X and also have expressions for male and female... so what do we do now ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

this is where i am stuck, do i add them both together and them set it equal to 82? i get stuck here

OpenStudy (coconutjj):

YAY!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

would the equation look like this: 7x+1+7x+1/2=82

OpenStudy (coconutjj):

Where did the Adults go?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

aren't they the x

OpenStudy (coconutjj):

yes, but they're not aliens... they're human.. better add them to the equation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

haahaha i don't know where to put the x though

OpenStudy (coconutjj):

X+(1+7x)+(1+7x)/2

OpenStudy (coconutjj):

TA DA!

OpenStudy (coconutjj):

Can you solve for x given the other side is 82
