Give Me a Break!

Last week, the Sisco County Board of Education decided to eliminate recess in all of the county's elementary and middle schools. The Board also voted to significantly limit the amount of school time devoted to physical education and health classes. While we understand that more time is spent in the classrooms preparing for important testing, we are shocked that the Board does not realize the importance of recess, P.E., and health classes!

First of all, students today are not eating the healthiest foods. With daily doses of pizza, hamburgers, and tacos, our children need exercise to stay in shape. Many students do not participate in after-school sports, so they must be given some time during school hours to keep fit. Research shows that only 20 percent of children ages 2–17 are eating the recommended amount of fruits and vegetables every day. And, children are also eating too many fats and sugars, which leads to higher energy levels. It is obvious that students need an outlet for these energy levels, and they need to be educated on healthy eating habits.

We understand that students must spend a large part of their school day preparing for end-of-the-year school testing. However, we also recognize that another crucial part of going to school is learning social skills and teamwork. If the students are not given time to interact during recess, or to work as a team in P.E. classes, when will they have these opportunities? They may graduate school with good grades, but if they pass with poor social skills and are unable to work on a team, they will fail in the real world.

Finally, we believe that some downtime during the day would actually help the students achieve higher scores on the tests they are given. We cannot forget that these are children, and youngsters typically become easily bored and frustrated. Do the members of the Board of Education remember being in school themselves? Would they have wanted to sit at a desk the entire day, with no time but lunch to interact with their friends?

We know that the Sisco County Board of Education has our children's best interests at heart. However, we think that there are other ways to give students more time for testing than by cutting their physical education and health programs and recess time. We propose a meeting this Friday to discuss alternative plans so that everybody—the Board, the parents, and the students—can be satisfied with the results.
