this is logic, and is studied as part of math. if p then q sometimes written \[ p\rightarrow q = \neg p \vee q\]

if they tell you p->q is true and p is true (so not p is false) then by the "equation", q must be true i.e. this \[ true = false \vee q \] requires q to be true
In some way, it is common sense. if you know study -> better grades and you are told she studied, then you conclude she got better grades. but logic can be tricky, so I posted some stuff that may or may not be useful.
