Which inequality matches the graph?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

−2x + 3y > 7 2x − 3y < 7 −3x + 2y > 7 3x − 2y < 7

OpenStudy (jackellyn):

Get y alone by solving, then compare the slopes y > or < mx+b (m is slope) and the y intercept.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so, whats next?

OpenStudy (jackellyn):

Then you have to see which way it is being shaded in and compare it to the sign of the matching inequality.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i dont know how?

OpenStudy (jackellyn):

Did you find the slop and y intercept? It will help narrw it down

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no, but i think the answer its B? ITS RIGHT?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Jackellyn

OpenStudy (tommynaut):

The answer is B, but why? I'll give you a shortcut method that might help you. 1. First, pick any point that the inequality would work for; so any point in the region. The easiest is (0,0). If you substitute in (0,0) into all the equations, only B and D work, right? 2. So we've narrowed it down to being either B or D. If you rearrange the equations (only B or D, because we know it's one of those) we're looking for a line that has a positive slope, because the slope of the line in the picture is positive, right? So, we can rearrange the equations, as @jackellyn said, in the form y < mx + b. If m is a negative number, it means the slope is negative. If m is a positive number, the slope is positive. We want a positive slope, so we want a positive m value.

D) 3X - 2y <7 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

??/

OpenStudy (tommynaut):

Oops my bad, I forgot to mention one last thing. If we get positive slopes for both B and D (which we did) then we need to consider the y intercepts too. In fact the answer is D (not B, sorry). It's because, in the picture it shows us that the y-intercept is between -3 and -4. The y intercept for B is -7/3, which is about -2.3. The y intercept for D is -7/2, which is about -3.5.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yea its D! THANK YOU SO MUCH!

OpenStudy (tommynaut):

No problem, sorry for the confusion.

CAN YOU HELP ME WITH ONE MORE?

OpenStudy (tommynaut):

Ok, but create a new question for it.
