what is the effect of the additional load resistance in a ripple voltage?

Ripple is the peak to peak variation at load caused by load current draining source between peak charging. Therefore any increase in load current will increae ripple.

Ripple voltage goes down. Because current goes down as load resistance goes up. Lower current means the filter capacitor will discharge less for each cycle, thus the voltage across it will be smaller, which is the ripple voltage.

If filter capacitor is present in the circuit then capacitor will discharge less for a increased load resistance and the peak to peak ripple voltage will reduce and as a limit it will go down to zero for infinite load resistance. But if a zener diode circuit is used without filter capacitor then increasing the load resistance will increase the current in zener diode and this will increase the incremental resistance rd of diode and as a result more ripple voltage will appear across the diode.
