Is this correct? Quilt squares are cut on the diagonal to form triangular quit pieces. The hypotenuse of the resulting triangles is 10 inches long. What is the side length of each piece? =10sqrt{2} ?

OpenStudy (phi):

If you cut a square along its diagonal , you form two triangles, each 45-45-90 triangles.

OpenStudy (phi):

Have you learned about 45-45-90 triangles?

OpenStudy (phi):

This shows you the formulas http://www.regentsprep.org/Regents/math/algtrig/ATT2/Ltri45.htm the long side (hypotenuse) is sqr(2) * leg

*edit and yes

OpenStudy (phi):

They tell you The hypotenuse of the resulting triangles is 10 inches long. and ask What is the side? the formula says hypotenuse = sqr(2) * side replace hypotenuse with 10 10 = sqr(2) * side divide both sides by sqr(2) to get 10/sqr(2) = side people usually don't like dividing by square roots (a habit from the days before calculators) so multiply top and bottom by sqr(2) to get what ?

=5sqr(2) Thanks
