??

OpenStudy (welshfella):

x + y = 60 and xy is a maximum any ideas?

OpenStudy (welshfella):

how did you get that?

OpenStudy (welshfella):

u could use calculus..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No sorry I actually got 500

OpenStudy (welshfella):

500??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah because 50 + 10= 60 and 50 * 10= 500

OpenStudy (welshfella):

let P = xy we need to find maxm of xy y = 60 - x P = x(60-x) now find dP/dx

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2x-60?

OpenStudy (welshfella):

dP/dx = 60 - 2x = 0 x = 30

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Is 30 the answer???

OpenStudy (welshfella):

yes

OpenStudy (welshfella):

- though the 2 integers are the same

OpenStudy (welshfella):

- so it might be argued that the answer is 31 - if one integer is larger than the other

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Alright thank you so much! And 30 was the right answer.

OpenStudy (welshfella):

ok yw
