Find the sum of the given polynomials. 3x ^2 + 2x - 5 and -4 + 7x ^2

OpenStudy (marihelenh):

First, you have to add like terms, so you will add 3x^2+7x^2 and -5-4

OpenStudy (marihelenh):

You should get 10x^2 and -9. To finish, add back in the 2x. Your final answer will be 10x^2+2x-9.

Like terms are terms that have the same variable part. That means the same variables and the same exponents. You can only add together like terms. \((\color{red}{3x ^2 + 2x - 5}) + (\color{green}{-4 + 7x ^2}) =\) \(=\color{red}{3x^2} + \color{green}{7x^2} + \color{red}{2x} + \color{red}{(-5) } + \color{green}{(-4)}\) \(=\color{red}{3x^2 + 7x^2} + 2x + \color{green}{(-5) + (-4)}\) \(= 10x^2 + 2x - 9\)
