Solve the system of equations. x + 3y = −1 2x + 2y = 6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You can solve it by elimination

OpenStudy (anonymous):

double the top equation so 2x+6y=-2 now subtract the second equation from that to only have y in the equation and solve for y, then apply the y value to any of the first 2 equations to solve for x.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You can divide the second equation by -2 x cancels and you have y= -4 plug in y to find x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and you have solved through elimination

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thats new, I don't think I have actually ever used division for elimination in simultaneous equations *-*

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

division is just multiplying by a reciprocal.

When I noticed that I become a lot faster in arithmetic, breaking down numbers into its factors for easier mental maths
