The build up of the war was because of people trying everything they could to prevent the inevitable. Was it 100% certain to happen? Who knows. But I think that because people try to stop it from happening, the divide got bigger and things got nastier.

So basically, at first, things weren't so bad. But as time went on, the fighting built up and up until the war broke out. At one point, things were so bad that a fight broke out in congress ( a senator beat another with a cane I think?)
