There are not any direct similarities that come to mind. The colonies went to war because they had it with the oppression of the King George III. The Iraq War was a result of several situations. There was credible reasons to believe Saddam had WMD's (This includes the biological and chemical weapons he was known to have and used in the Iraq War in the 90's). Also when Saddam refused to acknowledge the numerous UN requests he nullified the cease fire and put us back into a state of war with Iraq. The "reason" that the US went to war for oil is ignorant. Oil costs more now then it did before 9/11. We wouldn't go to war, lose several thousand american lives, and spend a trillion dollars to save two trillion over the next two decades. However I wouldn't doubt if oil is one of the reasons your teacher wants you to say.


The only thing else I can think of, which isn't related to the causes, but the both wars in general are...

Iraqis are currently fighting to hold their new Democratic system, similar to how the colonies were fighting to have one.

Other then that, the only other reason I can think of is that the colonies won the war because the cost became to great for the British to bear. Washington knew he wasn't going to outright defeat the British, his strategy was to hold out for as long as possible. This is what the fighting that has been since we invaded Iraq. They knew they were not going to win, but they would have to hold out until the US people couldn't stomach the casualties and price of the war and we would pull out. However that didn't work out for them.
