3 − (2x − 5) < −4(x + 2) Solve for inequality

pooja195 (pooja195):

Any ideas on where to start?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

distribute?

pooja195 (pooja195):

Yep :)

pooja195 (pooja195):

Start by distributing −4(x + 2)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-4x + -8?

pooja195 (pooja195):

yep so we have 3 − (2x − 5) < -4x-8 we can get rid of the parentheses on the other side 3 − 2x − 5< -4x-8 Combine the like terms

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3 - 6x -5 < -8

pooja195 (pooja195):

−2x+8<−4x−8 ^thats what it simplifies too -5-3=-8

pooja195 (pooja195):

Add 4x to both sides. −2x+8+4x<−4x−8+4x 2x+8<−8 Subtract 8 from both sides. 2x+8−8<−8−8 2x<−16

pooja195 (pooja195):

from here divide by 2 since we are isolating x

pooja195 (pooja195):

*divide both sides by 2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x >= -8?

pooja195 (pooja195):

not quite why did u flip the symbol? We only do that IF the number you are dividng by is a negative

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohhh so x < 8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

or =

pooja195 (pooja195):

the -8 was right

pooja195 (pooja195):

We dont need an = sign anywhere

pooja195 (pooja195):

x<8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok that makes since. Thank you

pooja195 (pooja195):

lol you're welcome :)
