Please explain! Which word in this sentence is a participle? Why do you need a new pair of running shoes? A. need B. running C. new D. do

OpenStudy (anonymous):

"A participle is a verbal ending in -ing (present) or -ed, -en, -d, -t, -n, or -ne (past) that functions as an adjective, modifying a noun or pronoun." So what do you think is the answer?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hm, well....I would say B but a participle can also be "past," and in that case it would be A.....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh, maybe I read that wrong. I would say B is the answer.

The participle is running. Participles are known to end with "ed" or "ing." They also function as adjectives. In your sentence the participle, which also acts as an adjective, is "running." "Need" is not used as an adjective.
