Slaves in Athens would recieve varied treatment depending on the temperement of their owners, and dependin gon what kind of slaves they were. The worst off were the slaves who laboured in really horrible conditions in the mines. Other slaves might work on the farms of their owners, or help them in their business. Female slaves were often domestic slaves, doing spinning and weaving, and performing other hosuehold tasks like cooking, cleaning, fetching water etc, or looking after children. Some female slaves worked as entertainers, or as prostitutes.

The Spartans relied more on the labour of the Helots, who were serfs rather than slaves. That is, while not free, and bound to work on the land, they kept their own language, customs,a nd communities, unlike slaves. They did the farming, which left the Spartans free to engage in warfare, their major preocupation. Sometimes male Helots accompanied Spartan armies to war, serving as soldiers servants or as skirmishers. Female Helots did the spinning and weaving, thus freeing Spartan women from the responsibility to produce cloth, which free Athenian women were expected to participate in.
