OpenStudy (vheah):

You have to solve for x but still keep the inequality symbol in the middle. \[4x+6<-6\] 1) you have to subtract +6 on both sides to leave 4x by itself, since you are subtracting it to the other side, change the positive 6 to a negative 6: \[4x < -6-6 \] \[4x < -12\] 2) divide the 4 to both sides to solve for x: \[4x/4 < -12/4\] since the 4's cancel on the left side of the inequality symbol, all you have to do is simplify -12/4 to find what is greater than x. \[x < -12/4\] \[x < -3\] 3.) To check, simply substitute x for anything less than -3 (meaning -4 and above).

4x+6<−6 Subtract 6 from both sides. 4x+6−6<−6−6 4x<−12 Divide both sides by 4. 4x / 4 < −12 / 4 x<−3
