The mindset Feudalism was much different then now, when you were born, you were expected to live at that level and you were either looked up to, or looked down on. A King was the absolute. What the King said, he was obeyed. The King was supposed to have been appointed by God. If you were to disobey the King, you disobeyed God Himself. The King had his own personal estate and his own army "The King's Army." Then there were factions, or estates of land divided among Nobles/Lords. These nobles and lords swore allegiance to the King. They each had their own family crest and banner. If the King wanted to go to war, than the King had to ask the Lords/Nobles if he may use the armies. The lords and nobles were to pay taxes to the King. Knights were esteemed and glorified soldiers of an Army. They often held their own property and were held as being honorable, full of chivalry and devout Christians. They were the army. Serfs were the bottom of the bottom. They were the workers, the people underneath everyone. They lived within a certain region, and if they belonged to one lord named "William", then they would pay their "taxes" to "William." They may pay by food, money, etc
