I am looking for some resources to prepare me for the biochemistry course. They assume some chemistry knowledge for that course. Any suggestions?
You could try Kahn academy, or MIT opencoursweare those websites are great.
Usually for a biochemistry course you need 1 year of general chemistry 1 year of organic and 1 year of biology.
depends on how in-depth your course is, if you prof wants you to understand the mechanisms behind say the glycolysis, fatty acid oxidation you'll need to know organic chem for that. a good book is leninger principles of biochemistry
yea the organic chemistry knowledge would be pretty much essential
Thanks! I am planning to do the first section of the fundamentals of biology course from MIT OCW. Here is the list of topics we are going to go through: TYPES OF ORGANISMS, CELL COMPOSITION COVALENT BONDS, HYDROGEN BONDS MACROMOLECULES: LIPIDS, CARBOHYDRATES, NUCLEIC ACID PROTEINS, LEVELS OF STRUCTURE, NON-COVALENT FORCES BIOCHEMICAL REACTIONS, ENZYMES AND ATP RESPIRATION AND FERMENTATION CHEMIOSMOTIC PRINCIPLE, PHOTOSYNTHESIS Ideally I would only like to learn work that i need to know for the course. Some of the students in the actual MIT class hadn't done a chemistry class as well as there is no prerequisites for the course. The lecturer implied that she could give students some notes or a book to get them up to speed quickly. I am hoping to find something like that to go through
Would you still recommend "leninger principles of biochemistry " ?
MIT OCW is great. Knowing some ideas on intermolecular forces and carbon chemistry can be important. Try to get an understanding on s and p orbitals and there notation and have somewhat understanding of hybridized orbitals such as sp, sp2, and sp3.
Thats all I can think of right now I know some other people will probably come and give some useful ideas.
You might want to memorize some functional groups too as its a lot to memorize at once when you come to it.
A lot of kids taking first year biology in college especially those that are intended as premed take chemistry at the same time as biology.
