simplify the expression 4(3x+2)-5(7x+5)

OpenStudy (lynfran):

whats the 1st step? do u know?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The x values

OpenStudy (anonymous):

combine all like terms

OpenStudy (lynfran):

how about expanding the brackets by multiplying the 4(3x+2) and -5(7x+5)

OpenStudy (lynfran):

what do u get when u expand 4(3x+2)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

12x+2?

OpenStudy (lynfran):

no 4*3x+4*2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ohhhhh I see 12x+8

OpenStudy (lynfran):

good now what do u get when u expand -5(7x+5)

OpenStudy (lynfran):

-5*7x+(-5)*5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-35x+-25

OpenStudy (lynfran):

-35x-25

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Right, you don't keep the addition sign.

OpenStudy (lynfran):

so we can now write the expanded problem 12x+8-35x-25

OpenStudy (lynfran):

now group like term and simplify

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Now we combine 12x-35 and 8-25 ??

OpenStudy (lynfran):

yes 12x-35x+8-25

OpenStudy (lynfran):

now add/subtract like terms we get?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

we get -23x+-17

OpenStudy (lynfran):

-23x-17 correct

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you. That addition sign will throw me off, so don't put it when you have a negative ?

OpenStudy (lynfran):

correct its like example 4x+(-1) we write 4x-1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ohhh I see, so I could add the addition sigh. I just need the parentheses

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sign*

OpenStudy (lynfran):

yes but it simplify and more neat when we just have 1 sign instead of 2 sign eg.. 4x^2 - 3x -6 than 4x^2 +(-3x)+(-6)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You helped me a ton, thank you.

OpenStudy (lynfran):

welcome
