Step one of factoring is to identify any common factors. Look at the numbers first, is there any factor in common to 3, 15, and 9?
well i did all the work and got 3(a2−5a+3) but thats not an answer
OK, great! That is part of the answer, you are halfway there.

Let's "zoom in" on the a^2 - 5a +3 for now.
Whenever we have a "trinomial", something with three terms we will have two parenthesis: a^2 - 5a + 3 = ( )( ) we are going to fill these parenthesis in.
The only way to get a^2 is to have a times a. These go in the "fronts" of the parenthesis like this: a^2 - 5a + 3 = (a )(a ) Does that make sense so far?
Hold on a second, something is off. We are doing fine so far, but the answer choices seem incorrect... let me check.
k
None of those answer choices are correct given the question. First of all, the question has variables of "a", the answers have variables of "x". Second of all, if you FOIL or multiply out the answer choices they all have a maximum term of 6x^2 not 3a^2 so it's not even close. The question is bogus.
You can FOIL each one and see that: A) (6x-9)(x-1) = 6x^2 - 15x + 9 B) (2x-3)(3x-3) = 6x^2 - 15x + 9 C) 3(2x-3)(x-1) = 6x^2 - 15x + 9 D) 3(2x-1)(x-3) = 6x^2 - 21x + 9 As far as picking a choice goes, I would first talk to the teacher and explain the fact that none of the answer choices matches up with the question. Then, if I was forced to pick one, I would personally pick C since it is at least fully factored. D seems wrong since it is a completely different answer. But we are far away from doing math and are doing test trickery right now. :)
