Find the measure of angle x in the figure below:

OpenStudy (anonymous):

35 degrees 47 degrees 51 degrees 62 degrees

@welshfella

OpenStudy (phi):

what does a straight line add up to (in degrees) ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Angles on one side of a straight line will always add to 180 degrees. @phi

OpenStudy (xapproachesinfinity):

it is 180 but what do you mean by one side lol

OpenStudy (xapproachesinfinity):

there is no such thing at all it is like you are saying the other add up to a different value or something

OpenStudy (phi):

ok , with that info you can find y and once you find y you can find x (3 angles of a triangle add up to 180)

OpenStudy (phi):

so the first step is to find y 57+61+ y = 180 add up 57 and 61

OpenStudy (anonymous):

118 when i add that up @phi

OpenStudy (phi):

ok so 118 + y= 180 to find y you could test numbers y=1, 2 , 3, ... but that will take forever. add -180 to both sides 118-118 + y = 180 -118 and simplify both sides. can you do that ?

OpenStudy (phi):

**add -118 to both sides (not 180)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank u!

OpenStudy (phi):

what did you get for y ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hold on. i will tag u when i get it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is it 62 degrees? @phi

OpenStudy (phi):

yes, y is 62 but remember the question wants "x" however the 3 angles of the triangle add up to 180 so you have more work to do x+ y+67= 180 and y is 62 so x+62+67= 180
