For measuring irregular solids, we can use something called Archimedes' principle, which states that "the volume of a solid is equal to the volume of water it displaces". So you can put some water in a graduated cylinder and then make sure to read the volume. Then, you put the irregular solid into the cylinder (for instance, as you mentioned, a stone), and read off the volume again. The difference in volume is the volume of the stone/irregular solid.
