On a coordinate grid, point P is at (5, 8) and point R is at (−1, −3). Points Q and S are a reflection of both points across the x-axis. What are the coordinates of Q and S? Q(−5, 8), S(1, −3) Q(5, −8), S(−1, 3) Q(−5, −8), S(1, 3) Q(−5, 8), S(−1, 3)

A reflection in the x-axis changes the sign of the y-coordinate. |dw:1440008131931:dw| What do you think the answer is?

OpenStudy (kyanda17):

i think it is Q -5,-8 S 1,3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Not quite. Note that the x-coordinate doesn't change...just the y-coordinate. Try again.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Haha. Don't trust me?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@ospreytriple I do trust u but @Robert136 give me da answer 1 den explain it to me

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Fair enough. However, I think I've explained that you just need to change the sign on the y-coordinates to get the correct answer.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It's therefore the third one. @ospreytriple had explained it well enough.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Remember that reflection across the x axis results in change of the sign for both coordinates. On the other hand, reflection across the y axis results in change of only the x value.
