Given the functions f(x) = 7x + 13 and g(x) = x + 2, which of the following functions represents f[g(x)] correctly?
f[g(x)] = 7x + 15
f[g(x)] = 7x + 27
f[g(x)] = 7x2 + 15
f[g(x)] = 7x2 + 27

OpenStudy (brodybarnes35):
add like terms

no i did lol

g(x)=x+2 so you plug in (x+2) for x in f(x)...what would that look like before you distribute it out and combine like terms?
OpenStudy (brodybarnes35):
7x + 13
OpenStudy (brodybarnes35):
7x
OpenStudy (anonymous):
that's f(x)...take a step back...what would you do if it told you to evaluate f(x) for x=3?

oh 21
OpenStudy (brodybarnes35):
7(3)

perfect! you'd plug it in! but here's the thing...you don't have a value for x. you have (x+2), but it still works the same way. You plug it in to f(x) so you get 7(x+2)+13
OpenStudy (anonymous):
so now's the time to use the distributive property and multiply it out.
OpenStudy (brodybarnes35):
oh ok so its D right i multiplied

go back :) I know it can be frustrating, but you can totally get this!
OpenStudy (brodybarnes35):
yikes i thought i got it right ://
OpenStudy (anonymous):
do 7 times x and then 7 times 2
OpenStudy (brodybarnes35):
7x and 14

bingo! so now put it all back together...7x+14+13
OpenStudy (brodybarnes35):
7x + 27!!
OpenStudy (anonymous):
which is what answer choice?
OpenStudy (brodybarnes35):
So B!
OpenStudy (anonymous):
there it is! great work!
