*I get what its asking me to do but I am confused* Jamal and Tanya use two different containers to carry water to a pool. -Jamal makes A trips to the pool, and Tanya makes B trips to the pool. -Jamal’s container holds x gallons of water, and Tanya’s container holds y gallons. Write an expression that represents the total amount of water carried to the pool.

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Let's look at Jamal first. A is the number of trips Jamal makes. Jamal's container holds x gallons of water. In A trips, how much water does Jamal carry?

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Jamal: 1 trip ---> 1 * x gallons = x 2 trips ---> 2 * x gallons = 2x 3 trips ---> 3 * x gallons = 3x ... A trips ---> ___ * x gallons = ____

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Follow the pattern above. In A trips, how much water does Jamal carry?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A trips ---> 4 * x gallons = 4x ???

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

You gave me the next step in the pattern. If I want to know how much Jamal carries in 4 trips, he carries 4x. That is correct. That is not what I was asking, though. You did 4 trips ---> 4 * x gallons. Now we need to use the letter A to mean a number we don't know. Use A itself in the expression. In 4 trips ---> 4 * x gallons In A trips ---> ___ * x gallons What goes in the blank.

5? or a variable

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

A variable, and the variable we are using is A. A means the number of trips Jamal makes. |dw:1440042495958:dw|
