Will medal! Need help soon! What is the percentage of nitrogen in N2O? Show all calculations leading to an answer

OpenStudy (aaronq):

Percent by mass? you need the molar masses of N and of N2O, then: \(\sf \%~by~mass=\dfrac{Molar~mass~of~N}{Molar~mass~of~N_2O}*100\%\)

Im completely lost though and my midterm is due in 2 hours. I do not understand chemistry at all. @aaronq

OpenStudy (aaronq):

Use the periodic table. The Molar masses of the elements are listed there, look up nitrogen. Write it down. Look up Oxygen, write it down. Now you have to find the molar mass of \(N_2O\), this means you add the molar mass of N twice then add the molar mass of O once. Perform what i wrote initially

OpenStudy (photon336):

@robijo7698 you need to do the following 1. count the number of each atom in the formula N2O we have to atoms of Nitrogen, and one atom of oxygen. 2. look up the molar mass of each element in the periodic table, molar mass of nitrogen multiplied by 2 because there are 2 atoms of nitrogen. molar mass of oxygen multiplied by 1 because there's 1 atom of oxygen. 3. add everything up 2*molarmass(nitrogen) + (molar mass of oxygen) this gives you the total molar mass of N2O 4. now to figure out the percentage of nitrogen you know that you have 2 atoms of nitrogen in your compound. molar mass of nitrogen*2/(total molar mass of N2O)* 100 = %
