Are proofs useful in the real world?

OpenStudy (steve816):

Nope, no one uses proofs in the real world. We have something called a calculator.

OpenStudy (bmmoffattb):

Actually, they are the biggest waste of time.

OpenStudy (dan815):

LOL yes they are used

OpenStudy (steve816):

No wonder why america is so behind in maths

OpenStudy (dan815):

when you are about to send a man into space, you arent going to wing it

@dan815 I think by 1% of the population

OpenStudy (bmmoffattb):

The reason that people think they're important in the real world is because they help people learn to put reasons behind the steps they take. It's like double checking what you're doing, I guess. If there isn't a reason, why do it, right? But this is pretty pointless and it's unlikely that you're going to use this skill very often.

OpenStudy (bmmoffattb):

Unless there is a theorem or postulate backing up your reasoning, you're probably doing the problem wrong. I guess this is to teach people to put reasoning behind the steps they take? Pointless to me.
