25) Use Google maps to find the displacement of the truck when it stops at the Shaw Festival Theatre. Use the scale on the map (bottom left corner) to establish the magnitude of the displacement and include a rough estimate of direction. Then calculate the average velocity of the truck.
the actual distance between the two points is 135KM.
I can't figure out the displacement part tho since the whole trip includes all sorts of ups and downs, twists and turns...........:"(
@IrishBoy123 Please Help!!!
displacement is not the same as distance are you studying vectors maybe if i run to the shop and back 100 times, my displacement when i get back will be zero i will have run 2 x 100 x the distance from the shop my average speed will be that distance divided by the time it took my average velocity will be zero because back and forward velocities cancel out does that make sense?
Vectors aren't introduced in this chapter......I'm dealing with simple displacement like you just mentioned above.........dear i know how to calculate all that but the only thing that's been confusing me is how do i calculate the displacement of the truck in those winding and twisting roads.......??
Do you want me to give you a quick example of what i'm dealing with here???? let me upload another question from the same test........
That's the first part of the question. (picture above)
this is a war or words! but also of underlying ideas! for the first one you posted, if B on the map is the theatre, the *displacement* is a vector whose magnitude is the distance AB on the map, and who direction is whatever you get off that map as an angle say to the North-South direction. its asks you to calculate its magnitude and roughly estimate its direction. and from that to calculate average *velocity*. which will be displacement/ time and in the same direction. the second one talks about *distance* which you correctly measured as the area under the graph. and then it asks for average *speed*. make any more sense? or just makes it worse?!?!
Point B is the final destination of the Truck (Shaw festival Theater), the most i've done in this chapter is add and subtract out opposite directions.....say if i walk 10m (north) and 5m (south), my displacement would be 5m (north). So in that sort of manner how do i calculate he displacement of the entire journey..... Point A is the Toroto Hall and Point B is the Shaw festival theater.
where the journey ends.
that's what i'm confused about, because the whole journey takes all sorts of turns, first it goes West, then gradually goes to South and at the end the truck is in the east with respect to the reference point.
acutally south east, if i were to draw on a proper scale.
measure A - B , as the crow flies. ie straight line. that is the magnitude of the displacement. ie the amount of the displacement.
Oh i got it.... so that distance would be the displacement?????? A direct line from point A to Point B.
the turns cancel each other out. |dw:1440610508815:dw|
